We recently read about a free National Forest campsite that is only a half mile or so off highway 64 near Grandview Point. We hadn't spent a lot of time on the East Rim Drive of Grand Canyon so we set up camp at this excellent location for two nights, checked out the many lightly-crowded viewpoints and even hiked a couple of miles of the upper Grandview and Red Canyon trails. Summer heat kept us from going much further into the Canyon. After getting a permit at the Backcountry Office, we then drove the horrible roads out to Bass Camp and spent a couple of nights there, walking down the Bass Trail almost to the Esplanade one day. The temperatures at 6500' were much nicer than Phoenix. Major fires were burning in two locations on the South Rim but neither impacted our stay.
